The Referendum

On Nov. 4. residents of the Alexandria School District will vote on a capital projects levy to enhance school safety, technology, and facilities for every student. Here's what you need to know.

About The Referendum

On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Alexandria Public Schools will ask voters to approve a $3 million, 10-year capital projects levy.

If approved, this levy will:

Secure

Secure schools with upgraded entrances, visitor check-in systems, cameras, lockdown tools, and cybersecurity.

Connect

Connect classrooms by updating technology and improving network infrastructure.

Prepare

Prepare students for the future by maintaining safe, modern facilities and ensuring access to up-to-date educational tools.

The levy is designed to be fiscally responsible—adding less than $10 per month for the average homeowner—while freeing up general fund dollars currently spent on technology so they can be directed to classrooms, staff, and student programs.

If the referendum does not pass, the district will face further cuts, larger class sizes, fewer electives, reduced student services, and postponed critical safety, technology, and facility needs.

Why Vote Yes?

This referendum is about more than funding—it’s about providing the tools, safety, and stability our schools need to ensure every child has access to a high-quality education. Here’s how it makes a difference.

Modernizing Technology

The referendum funds secure, up-to-date technology for students and staff. This means our schools will have the equipment needed for a 21st-century education, and it ensures our kids are learning on the same tools used in today's workforce.

Student Safety

A "yes" vote improves secure building systems, which directly enhances student safety. This allows our students to feel safe and focus on learning.

Closing the Gap

Minnesota doesn't fund school technology, and while 62 other districts have a dedicated capital levy for this, Alexandria doesn't. This referendum would bring us in line with neighboring districts and give our students the same resources as their peers.

Dedicated Resources

This referendum provides stable, dedicated funding for technology and facilities, preventing these costs from draining our district’s general fund. This allows the district to use general fund dollars for other critical needs, like staff and programs.

Low-Cost Investment

The cost is minimal for a significant gain. It's a small investment with a low impact on property owners, costing only about $10 per month on an average-valued home.

How We Compare

Voter-Approved Capital Projects Levy (Dollars Per Student)

More than 60 districts statewide, including many nearby school districts, have a capital projects levy. Alexandria Public Schools does not.

Alexandria's School Taxes Compared To School Districts With Similar Demographics

Alexandria is 4th from the bottom for school taxes based on the average home value. If the referendum passes, Alexandria would only move up to 5th from the bottom, between Brainerd & Monticello. Bottom line, our kids don't have the same resources as the majority of school districts of similar size.
